Storm and wind damage: causes, what to check, and how it is fixed

LA storms crack tiles, peel shingles, and drop branches on roofs. We check the damage, document it, and put the roof right.

What LA storms do

  • Wind lifts and cracks tiles
  • Wind-driven rain gets under materials
  • Falling branches gouge and break
  • Flashing works loose

The problem

It is rarely hail here, but the damage is real

Los Angeles does not see much hail, so storm damage here comes from three things: strong wind, wind-driven rain, and falling branches. The Santa Ana winds and the winter storm season lift and crack tiles, peel shingles, and work flashing loose. Wind-driven rain pushes water sideways under materials that shed a straight rain just fine, and the tree-lined streets across the Valley and the Westside mean branches come down on roofs when the wind picks up.

Any of these opens a path for water, and the trouble is that the damage often does not leak until the next real rain. A cracked tile or a lifted shingle can sit unnoticed until a storm finds it, and then the leak shows up inside. That is why checking after a storm, even when the ceiling looks clean, matters. Our page on signs of storm damage covers what to look for.

We handle the aftermath through storm damage repair and roof repair, and because storm damage is often an insurance matter, our insurance claim support documents the cause and extent for your claim.

Signs of storm damage

  • Slipped, cracked, or missing tiles or shingles
  • Tile pieces or shingle granules in the yard

What to check

Check safely, from the ground and inside

1

Walk the yard

Look for fallen tile pieces, shingle granules, and debris. Broken material on the ground means broken spots on the roof.

2

Look up at the roofline

Scan for slipped, cracked, or missing tiles and shingles, and any bent flashing, without climbing up.

3

Check inside and the attic

Look for fresh ceiling stains, damp spots, or daylight through the deck. The attic often shows damage first.

4

Photograph everything

Take photos from the ground for your records. They help if you file a claim, as our insurance support page explains.

How we fix it

  • Replace cracked, broken, and missing tiles or shingles
  • Reseal or replace loose and bent flashing
  • Repair any decking a branch has damaged
  • Clear debris and check drainage
  • Document the damage for an insurance claim
The fix

Put the roof right, and paper the claim

The repair itself is direct: replace the broken tiles or shingles, reseal or replace the flashing the wind worked loose, and repair any decking a falling branch damaged. We clear the debris and check that the valleys and gutters still drain, since a storm often leaves both blocked.

Because sudden storm damage is frequently covered by homeowners insurance, while age and wear are not, documentation matters as much as the repair. We put the cause and extent in writing, which is what a claim turns on, as our pages on filing a roof claim and whether insurance covers leaks cover. Moving early also keeps a broken spot from becoming a bigger leak, as our page on delaying a repair shows, and a full roof inspection confirms nothing was missed.

Storm damage FAQ

Common questions

No. Check from the ground and the attic. A storm-hit roof can have loose footing, and going up is how people get hurt. Leave the on-roof look to someone with the gear.
Not necessarily. A cracked tile or lifted shingle may not leak until the next real rain. It is worth checking the outside even when the ceiling looks clean.
Sudden storm damage is often covered; age and wear are not. Photos and a documented inspection help show the cause, which is what a claim turns on.
Before the next rain if you can. A damaged spot is a doorway for water, and closing it early keeps a small storm repair from becoming a bigger one.
