Often, but it depends on the cause. Homeowners policies in California generally cover a roof leak when it comes from a sudden, accidental event, like a windstorm tearing off shingles or a tree falling on the roof. They generally do not cover leaks from wear, age, or lack of maintenance. So a storm-driven leak is usually covered, while a roof that slowly wore out is not. The decision is your insurer's, and every policy is different.
Almost every coverage question about a roof comes down to one distinction. Insurance is built to cover sudden, unexpected events, not the gradual aging every roof goes through. A windstorm that lifts tiles and lets rain in during the same storm is the kind of sudden event a policy is designed for. A roof that quietly wore out over twenty years and finally started leaking is considered normal wear, which policies exclude.
That is why the cause matters so much, and why documentation is everything. When damage can be tied to a specific, datable event, a claim has solid ground. When it has clearly built up over time, an insurer will decline it as maintenance. We are a roofing contractor, not your insurer, so we cannot promise what will be approved. What we can do is give you an honest, documented assessment of what caused the damage, which is the roofing side of our insurance claim support.
| Often covered | Usually not covered |
|---|---|
| Wind damage from a storm | Wear and tear from age and sun |
| A tree or large limb falling on the roof | A roof already past its lifespan |
| Sudden damage from a datable event | Damage from deferred maintenance |
| Resulting interior water damage | Pre-existing, gradual leaks |
If your leak followed a storm, our storm damage roof repair page covers the repair side, and our guide on how to file a roof insurance claim walks through the steps.
The single most useful thing you can do is document the damage soon after it happens. Take dated photos of the roof and any interior water damage, keep receipts for anything you do to limit further damage, and have the roof assessed and written up by a licensed roofer while the cause is still clear. The longer damage sits, the harder it is to tie it to the storm that caused it, and the more it looks like ordinary wear.
If water is still coming in, protecting the home comes first, which usually means tarping through our emergency roof repair. Once the roof is documented and the claim is settled, we handle the repair or, if the damage is broad, the replacement. A written roof inspection is often the document a claim is built on.
We assess and document roof damage for your claim, then handle the repair once it is settled. Call (310) 806-5959 or request an assessment below.
