Common structural carpentry questions answered

Rafter tails are the ends of the roof joists that extend past the walls to form the eave overhang. They rot when gutters overflow, or if the roof edge flashing fails and lets water seep behind the fascia board directly into the end-grain of the joist.
Usually no. If the interior portion of the rafter inside the attic is sound, we can cut away the rotted tail and sister a new structural block alongside it (extending back into the attic framing for load support) without replacing the entire rafter.
A C-39 license is a specialty roofing license which limits a contractor to roof coverings. A Class B General Building license allows us to handle structural wood framing, rafter carpentry, walls, and load-bearing elements. Holding both lets us perform full structural repairs without subbing them out.
Our quotes specify how we handle damaged wood. When we tear off the old roof, we inspect the sheathing. If we find delaminated or rotted plywood panels, we replace them at a set price per sheet, keeping the project transparent.
Yes. Damp, rotted wood is a prime target for subterranean termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles. Rotted holes in soffits also provide entry points for rodents and birds to build nests in your attic. Replacing rotted wood seals the attic.
