Wildfire season and your roof: Class A and ember resistance

In the hillside and canyon neighborhoods of Los Angeles, wildfire is a real part of life, and the roof plays a bigger role in a home's fire safety than most people realize. In many fires, it is not a wall of flame that ignites a house but wind-blown embers that land on the roof and in the gaps around it. Understanding what makes a roof fire-resistant, and what Class A means, helps you reduce that risk.

Embers, not just flames

During a wildfire, the wind carries burning embers well ahead of the fire itself, sometimes for long distances. These embers land on roofs, collect in valleys and gutters full of dry debris, and lodge in gaps, where they can ignite the roof or the home. This is why the roof and its surroundings matter so much: a fire-resistant roof and clear, ember-free gaps remove a common ignition path. What Class A means

Roofing materials are rated for fire resistance, and Class A is the highest rating, meaning the roof assembly offers the greatest resistance to fire exposure from outside. In California's fire-prone areas, a Class A roof is important, and it is achieved by the whole assembly, the covering plus the layers beneath, not just the surface material alone. A knowledgeable roofer builds the roof as a complete Class A system.

Which materials help

Asphalt shingle can meet Class A as a full assembly. The material is one part of the picture; the rest is keeping the roof and its edges clear.

Reduce the ember risk around the roof

Beyond the material, the biggest thing you can do is deny embers a place to catch. Keep gutters and valleys clear of dry leaves and debris, trim branches back from the roof, and address any gaps where embers could lodge.
