From the ground, look at the lines. A good roof runs straight, even courses, so waves, dips, and crooked rows suggest a rushed job. Look at the nails, because nails driven through the surface, overdriven, or left exposed are a leak waiting to happen. Check the flashing at the chimney, valleys, and wall joints, since that is where a careless crew cuts corners and where most early leaks start. A missing drip edge at the eaves, or old material reused instead of replaced, are other tells.
