Ridge vents, turbines, and attic fans compared

Three ways to get hot air out of an attic, and when each makes sense.

Getting hot, moist air out of the attic is half of good roof ventilation, and there is more than one way to do it. Ridge vents, turbines, and powered attic fans all move exhaust air, but they work differently and suit different homes. If you are dealing with a hot attic or planning a new roof, knowing the trade-offs helps you and your roofer choose the right exhaust for your house.

First, the principle

Whatever exhaust you choose, it only works with matching intake. Air has to come in low, at the eaves, and leave high, so a great exhaust vent with no intake does little. Ridge vents

A ridge vent runs along the peak of the roof, letting warm air escape continuously across the whole ridge. It is low-profile, has no moving parts, and works with the natural rise of hot air, so it is quiet and reliable. Paired with intake vents at the eaves, it provides even, continuous exhaust, which is why it is a common choice on a new roof. Its main requirement is enough ridge length and matching intake to work well.

Turbines

Turbines, the spinning "whirlybird" vents, use wind to pull air out of the attic. When the wind blows, they draw air actively; when it is still, they work more like a passive vent. They cover a spot rather than the whole ridge, so several may be needed. They are inexpensive and simple, though the moving parts can wear over time.

Powered attic fans

A powered attic fan uses a motor to actively pull hot air out, so it moves the most air of the three. That power is its strength and its catch: it uses electricity, and if the attic is not sealed well from the living space, a strong fan can pull conditioned air up out of the house, which works against your cooling. Sized and installed correctly, with good intake, it can be effective on a stubbornly hot attic.

Which is right for you

For most homes, a ridge vent paired with proper intake is a clean, reliable solution and the natural choice on a new roof. Turbines are a low-cost option for spot exhaust. Powered fans suit a particularly hot attic where passive venting is not enough, provided the attic is sealed and the fan is sized right.
