Most home roof replacements take one to three working days. A simple asphalt shingle roof on an average home can be a single day. A larger home, a tile roof, a steep or complex roof, or one that needs wood repair once opened up runs several days. Weather and material delivery can add time. Because we work business hours, a job that spans days pauses each evening and resumes the next morning.
The size of the roof is the first factor, since more square footage means more tear-off and more surface to cover. Material matters next. Shingle goes down faster than tile, and tile adds time both to remove and to set. The shape of the roof plays in too, because a steep or cut-up roof with lots of valleys and penetrations is slower and needs more safety setup than a simple gable. And once the old roof is off, any soft or rotted decking that turns up has to be replaced before the new roof goes on, which can add a day.
Weather is the wild card. We do not lay a new roof into rain, so a wet stretch can push a job. Our main roof replacement page covers the full process, and if the noise and disruption are on your mind, see whether it is noisy and staying home during the work.
| Job | Typical time |
|---|---|
| Average shingle roof | 1 day |
| Larger or steeper shingle roof | 1 to 2 days |
| Tile roof | 2 to 4 days |
| Wood repair or complex roof | Add a day or more |
| Rain delays | Add time as needed |
Day one usually starts with setup and the tear-off of the old roof, then any decking repair, then the underlayment. On a small roof, the new surface can go on the same day. On a larger or tile roof, the new material and details carry into the following days, and the job ends with cleanup, a magnetic sweep for nails, and a final check. If your roof does not truly need full replacement, a roof repair is far shorter, and a roof inspection tells you which one you are looking at. For the permit side, see our roof permit page.
